Get up to speed with modern construction techniques

MMC for Small & Medium Sized Enterprises: A Practical Transition Toolkit has been developed to address a recognised capability and knowledge gap across small and medium sized enterprise businesses within the housing construction industry. Industry feedback indicates a growing need for business owners and their staff to better understand the benefits, drivers and practical requirements of adopting Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) practices, including the Building 4.0 principles recommended by PrefabAUS (2023).

The course provides an introduction for businesses wishing to commence an MMC transition. It supports participants to:

  • understand the purpose and value of transitioning to MMC practices
  • identify which aspects of their operations, service delivery or product offerings could be adapted.
  • assess the viability of transition through a structured evaluation of existing business practices.
  • undertake early-stage transition activities through piloting or small scale trials.

Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcome Description
LO1: Identify a clear purpose for transitioning a business to MMC practices. This outcome reflects multistructural knowledge, requiring learners to recognise and describe three key drivers for transitioning to MMC practices: industry trends, market pressures, and sustainability improvements.
LO2: Understand the core principles of MMC focused self assessment. This outcome reflects multistructural knowledge, requiring learners to understand the five key components that underpin a transition readiness self assessment: standardisation, workforce capability, supply chain structures and partnerships, technology readiness, and leadership.
LO3: Understand how to evaluate a business using the core principles of MMC-focused self-assessment. This outcome reflects relational knowledge, requiring learners to make connections across the self assessment principles and begin applying them meaningfully within a specific business context.
LO4: Understand a piloting process and identify a potential MMC pilot opportunity. This outcome reflects a progression across SOLO levels. Learners first develop unistructural understanding of a pilot process, then identify the key stages of piloting (prepare, pilot, scale and review) at a multistructural level, before connecting the process to their own business context at a relational level.
