Who can use the centre?

Anyone living in Victoria can make an appointment to meet with our experienced advisors. You might find our services especially useful if you:

  • have recently migrated to Australia
  • are a retrenched worker or you are unemployed
  • are a student, an apprentice or trainee, or are thinking about studying
  • are returning to work after a long-term unpaid caring role
  • are considering a career change and want guidance to plan your next steps

Skills & Jobs Centres work alongside local industry and communities to provide expert advice and assistance on training and employment opportunities, including:

  • Identifying training qualifications for a successful career transition

Victorian Early Leaver Connection Initiative (VELCI)

Helping young people re-engage with education, training and employment through the Career Advice Service (CAS).

The VELCI Career Advice Service supports young people who have formally left school before completing Year 12, helping them engage in pathways into further education, training, or employment.

Delivered by the Melbourne Polytechnic Skills and Jobs Centre in collaboration with the Department of Education, this free and voluntary service provides guidance and support to ensure early leavers remain engaged and on track for long-term success.

Who can access this service?

You may be eligible if you live in one of the following local government areas:

  • Banyule
  • Darebin
  • Nillumbik
  • Whittlesea
  • Yarra

And you meet one of these criteria:

  • Under 17 years old with a formal exemption from school and participating in full-time education, training or employment.
  • Aged 17 to 20, enrolled with a TAFE or non-school provider in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC)

What support does the Career Advice Service provide?

  • Career guidance from a qualified careers advisor
  • Ongoing support and mentoring through regular check-ins
  • A dedicated contact to help with questions about training, work or study
  • Help with appointments, enrolments, and referrals to other services if needed

How to access the VELCI Career Advice Service

If you’re under 17 and have a formal exemption from school, your school can assist you in connecting with the VELCI Career Advice Service during the exemption process. If you're aged 17-20, you can self refer by reaching out to us directly. We’re also available to support schools, community organisations, and service providers.
