Down to the Core is an excerpt from Jan's memoir of the same name. It is a first person account of the journey through leukaemia and near death that she took with her twenty-one year old son a decade ago, and the ripple effect this created in their lives.
The memoir also looks at her experience as a psychiatric nurse of thirty years and her subsequent burnout. Here she reads an excerpt from the beginning section of the memoir dealing with her son's near-fatal experience while undergoing the chemotherapy meant to save his life.
