With over 23,000 jobs in the industry since 2016, Melbourne Polytechnic’s Certificate III in Retail Nursery (Apprenticeship stream) is the ideal entry to an ever-growing field. Develop and harness your skills within the retail nursery trade, as you’re immersed in industry-led expertise that will teach you the fundamentals required to own and operate your own nursery. You will learn all aspects of caring for plant life, from planting seeds to the blooming flowers.

Melbourne Polytechnic’s industry-experienced and qualified teachers will guide your studies on plant placement and care, through hands-on experience and trade insights. You’ll train within our working retail nurseries and state-of-the-art greenhouses, expansive potting sheds, plant tissue laboratories, and well resourced libraries. Take the opportunity to participate in the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, thanks to Melbourne Polytechnic’s extensive industry connections and partnership with the Nursery and Garden Industry of Victoria, and gain real-world experience before you graduate.

At the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll be qualified to work within a range of retail nursery practices. You might work in plant production and maintenance, wholesaling and retailing of plants, or even marketing and promotion of plant products and services.

Assessment is based on your ability to achieve unit outcomes. There is the opportunity for workplace delivery and assessment of competencies and methods include demonstration of skills, tests and assignments, folios, oral activities, and third party reports.

Melbourne Polytechnic offers a range of payment options to help you pay your tuition fees, so you can get on with your studies.

Fees displayed are effective for new applications received on or after 1 November 2019. Tuition fees do not include textbooks, course materials or overseas student health insurance and visa fees.

After initial deposit, international students are able to pay tuition fees in installments, four times per year.

Requirements

  • you may enrol in this course without having completed lower level studies in Horticulture
  • Apprentices will be eligible for this course if they are employed in the Parks and Gardens industry and have a signed Training Agreement with the employer and Melbourne Polytechnic

The first step to enrolling is completing the application short form. You'll then receive a link to complete a few more personal details.

It is a mandatory government requirement for all prospective students to complete an online literacy and numeracy assessment. Once you are ready to enrol, you will be invited to attend of our Skills and Job Centres, or come to campus to complete your enrolment in person.

Apprenticeships are coordinated via the Trade and Traineeship Support Unit (TSU) where you will provide details of your employer, who will register you with an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN) provider.

The AASN will register your training contract on DELTA and you will be allocated a DELTA number. Melbourne Polytechnic will then be able to enrol you into your training program.
