Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL)

The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) will give you work-related experience, literacy and numeracy skills, and personal life skills.

The VCAL is a hands-on study option for a recognised and accredited senior secondary school certificate. If you’re still at school, or even if you have left, and are over 15 years old, this course is a great way to broaden your options for further study or work.

Melbourne Polytechnic offers VCAL programs covering different industry areas. Study pathways you could consider after VCAL are pre-apprenticeships, apprenticeships, or entry into vocational education and training (VET) courses.

  • Music
  • EAL (English as an Additional Language)
  • Ticket-to-a-Trade

Packaging rules

A VCAL program must contain curriculum that can be justified against the purpose statement of each of the VCAL strands. To be awarded a Foundation, Intermediate or Senior VCAL certificate, students must successfully complete a learning program, which contains a minimum of 10 credits. One credit is awarded on successful completion of 90-100 nominal hours of accredited curriculum. A certificate must contain two VCAL units and other curriculum components from :

  • VCAL units
  • VCE units
  • VET accredited curriculum or training packages
  • Further Education accredited curriculum

Program to include:

  • Minimum of two VCAL credits, one of which one is a Foundation, Intermediate or Senior personal development VCAL unit
  • One literacy credit (at Certificate I, II or III level)
  • One numeracy credit
  • One industry specific credit
  • One work related skills credit

Curriculum components to the value of six credits at Certificate I (Foundation), Certificate II (Intermediate) or Certificate III (Senior) level (or above).

Certificate III in Media
Get ahead in the world of media! Our Certificate III in Media is an accredited film and radio course tailored to young people who are interested in media and may have experienced homelessness or educational disadvantage.

VCAL (Foundation)
Achieve your Senior School Certificate with Melbourne Polytechnic. The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Foundation course will give you the basic literacy and numeracy skills needed for you to go onto further education, training or employment.

VCAL (Intermediate)
Achieve your Senior School Certificate with Melbourne Polytechnic. The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Intermediate course provides the literacy and numeracy skills needed for you to go onto further education, training or employment.

VCAL (Senior)
Melbourne Polytechnic’s Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Senior Course will give you the literacy and numeracy skills needed to assist you to get into mainstream study, education or employment.

VCAL Animal Studies (Intermediate)
Melbourne Polytechnic’s Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Animal Studies course is a dual qualification that will provide you with a Certificate II in Animal Studies and a VCAL Certificate at Intermediate level.

VCAL Animal Studies (Senior)
Our Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Animal Studies Course is a dual qualification that will provide you with a Certificate II in Animal Studies and a VCAL Certificate at Senior level.

VCAL Carpentry - Foundation
Our Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Carpentry Course is a dual qualification providing a Certificate II in Building and Construction (Carpentry) and a VCAL Certificate at Foundation level.

VCAL Carpentry - Intermediate
Melbourne Polytechnic’s Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Carpentry course is a dual qualification giving you a Certificate II in Building and Construction (Carpentry) and a VCAL Certificate at Intermediate level.

VCAL Carpentry - Senior
Our Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Carpentry Course is a dual qualification giving you a Certificate II in Building and Construction (Carpentry) and a VCAL Certificate at Senior level.

VCAL Creative Industries - Intermediate
Our Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Creative Industries program offers an exciting start to a career in the media industry. This film and radio course is Melbourne Polytechnic accredited and tailored to young people interested in media who may have experienced homelessness or educational disadvantage. This course will give you a Certificate II in Creative Industries and credits towards a VCAL at Intermediate level.

VCAL EAL YAMEC
Melbourne Polytechnic's Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) English as an Additional Language (EAL) Young Adult Migrant Education Courses (YAMEC) offers the perfect program for you if you’re new to Australia, aged between 15 and 26, from a non-English speaking background, and have had disrupted, or incomplete education but can write and speak English.
