Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL)

The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) will give you work-related experience, literacy and numeracy skills, and personal life skills.

The VCAL is a hands-on study option for a recognised and accredited senior secondary school certificate. If you’re still at school, or even if you have left, and are over 15 years old, this course is a great way to broaden your options for further study or work.

Melbourne Polytechnic offers VCAL programs covering different industry areas. Study pathways you could consider after VCAL are pre-apprenticeships, apprenticeships, or entry into vocational education and training (VET) courses.

  • Music
  • EAL (English as an Additional Language)
  • Ticket-to-a-Trade

Packaging rules

A VCAL program must contain curriculum that can be justified against the purpose statement of each of the VCAL strands. To be awarded a Foundation, Intermediate or Senior VCAL certificate, students must successfully complete a learning program, which contains a minimum of 10 credits. One credit is awarded on successful completion of 90-100 nominal hours of accredited curriculum. A certificate must contain two VCAL units and other curriculum components from :

  • VCAL units
  • VCE units
  • VET accredited curriculum or training packages
  • Further Education accredited curriculum

Program to include:

  • Minimum of two VCAL credits, one of which one is a Foundation, Intermediate or Senior personal development VCAL unit
  • One literacy credit (at Certificate I, II or III level)
  • One numeracy credit
  • One industry specific credit
  • One work related skills credit

Curriculum components to the value of six credits at Certificate I (Foundation), Certificate II (Intermediate) or Certificate III (Senior) level (or above).

Courses
Certificate III in Screen and Media
Do you want to work in the media? Our Certificate III in Screen and Media is an accredited course for disadvantaged young people who want to gain skills in radio and film production.

VCAL (Foundation)
Achieve your Senior School Certificate with Melbourne Polytechnic. The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Foundation course will give you the basic literacy and numeracy skills needed for you to go onto further education, training or employment.

VCAL (Intermediate)
The VCAL Intermediate program will give you supported training in literacy, numeracy and communication skills, preparing you for further study, pre-apprenticeships, apprenticeships or employment.

VCAL (Senior)
Melbourne Polytechnic’s Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Senior Course will give you the literacy and numeracy skills needed to assist you to get into mainstream study, education or employment.

VCAL Creative Industries - Intermediate
Start you career in media while you work towards your senior school certificate. Our Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Creative Industries course is for young people who have had limited access to education, or who have experienced homelessness. At the end of this course, you will have a basic knowledge of the film and radio industries.

VCAL Ticket to a Trade - Intermediate
Do you want to learn a trade, but you don’t know which one? The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Ticket to a Trade is a six month course that will give you the opportunity to try a trade.
