Melbourne Polytechnic’s courses will give you the skills that are highly sought after by employers. Demand for carpentry and trades is high. You could work in both the public and private sector, or run your own small business later down the track. Our certificate courses cover both pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship training.   

The carpentry pre-apprenticeship is an intensive training program in Melbourne Polytechnic's purpose-built building barn at Heidelberg. Successful completion of this course leads into an apprenticeship in carpentry, framework, formwork or finishing.

Trainees who undertake an apprenticeship program will train both on-site with their employer, and also off-site at Melbourne Polytechnic. The training centre at Melbourne Polytechnic's Heidelberg campus  has Victoria’s most technologically advanced facilities for building and construction including our Technical Education Centre (TEC).

You will learn about:

  • Building structures and exterior cladding
  • Demolition
  • First aid and occupational health and safety
  • Floor, wall and roof framing
  • Installing windows
  • Levelling
  • Mathematical ideas and techniques
  • Performing calculations and measurements
  • Reading and interpreting plans
  • Roofing
  • Using hand and power tools

Certificate II in Building and Construction (Carpentry) - Pre-Apprenticeship
The Certificate II in Building and Construction - Carpentry (22216VIC) is offered as an individual qualification and also as an opportunity for a dual qualification with the Certificate II in Joinery, Shopfitting and Stairbuilding – Pre-apprenticeship (22145VIC). Build a future in carpentry, joinery, stairbuilding and shopfitting to become the apprentice every site manager wants to employ on a diverse range of building projects.
