The aim of Melbourne Polytechnic's Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 3 Award in Wines and Spirits short course is to provide detailed analysis of the principal wines and spirits of the world. You will also benefit from in-depth tastings enabling you to learn to identify product style and quality

Build on your growing expertise and WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits, with Melbourne Polytechnic’s internationally recognised Level 3 Award in Wines and Spirits.

As with the Level 2 Award, the Level 3 Award was developed by the UK-based Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET). Melbourne Polytechnic is an Approved Program Provider for WSET.

The WSET Level 3 Award in Wines and Spirits is open to you if you hold the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits or if you can demonstrate an equivalent level of knowledge. It is recommended that you complete the Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits before progressing to the Level 3 Award.

To gain the Level 3 Award qualification, you must successfully complete:

Unit 1

  • multiple choice paper of 50 questions
  • question paper requiring short written answers

Unit 2

  • full tasting notes on TWO wines

Program outline follows:>

Unit 1 – Wines and Spirits of the World

  • Production of Wine (location, viticulture, vinification, maturation and bottling, labelling regulations)
  • France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Central and South Eastern Europe, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, North America, South and Central America
  • Sparkling Wines
  • Fortified (Liqueur) Wines
  • Information and Advice for Customers and Staff

Unit 2 – Tasting and Evaluating Wines of the World

Course Duration:

  • 32 hours, plus written and tasting exams

Melbourne Polytechnic may deliver the WSET Level 3 Award in Wines and Spirits in a variety of formats:

  • a 4.5 day workshop, including exam
  • OR over a number of evenings face to face
  • OR evenings online – with a day, including the exams

All delivery will be held at a Melbourne Polytechnic campus, except for those held online.

The WSET Level 3 Award in Wines and Spirits short course is offered in Semester 2 for 2016.
