Shane Simmonds is the Performing Arts Department Technical Officer with a passion for music performance and composition, theatre production, and sound and lighting design.
Shane Simmonds has over two decades of experience in the music industry. He has worked as a professional musician performing most musical genres. As a saxophone player he has performed with swing bands, classical ensembles through to contemporary and rock and lists performing with James Morrison, Paul McDermott, and members of Radio Birdman as highlights. Shane has worked as a production technician specialising in sound. Shane has fulfilled technical and/or head technical roles in most large Melbourne theatres including the Princess, Regent, Comedy, Forum, Malthouse and Her Majestys Theatre.
Shane has worked with large touring musicals such as Mamma Mia, Dirty Dancing and Oh What a Night and done front of house sound for Bob Hawk, Bert Newton, Ricky Ponting, Reg Livermore, Tom Burlinson, Kate Ceberano, Russell Morris, Darryl Cotton, and Jim Keys. He has also worked as sound and light technician and/or tour manager for government initiatives such as Croc Fest and toured with well known acts including Scared Weird Little guys and Kate Miller-Heidke. Shane was also proprietor of Spaghetti Studio, a production contracting service for 15 years. Shane also holds relevant tickets for working at heights, forklift, Elevated Work Platform, electrical testing and tagging, first aid, and is a trained fire warden officer. Shane has taught VET in schools Music Technical Production for 5 years, and is a frequent VCAA examination panelists/ assessor.
Shane has a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE), and an Advanced Diploma in Sound Production. He is employed at Melbourne Polytechnic as both a technical officer where he manages and maintains the technical equipment supporting the Performing Arts Department, and as a teacher. Shane has a passion for music performance and composition, theatre production, and sound and lighting design. He is also passionate about teaching and training and teaches in the Certificate IV in Live Production and the Certificate IV in Music Performance programs at Melbourne Polytechnic.
