The 2008 NMIT Graduation Ceremony was held on May 22 at the Dallas Brooks Centre in East Melbourne. ABC Radio 774 presenter Jon Faine spoke of the importance of ceremony in recognising life achievements. Faine also reflected on his own experience as a student of NMIT and mentioned the knowledge and support of the NMIT teaching staff.
Approximately 400 graduates representing each of the Faculties received their awards. Present to wish them well were the NMIT Board President Elaine Forde, NMIT Chief Executive Officer Brian MacDonald, NMIT senior staff, invited guests and the graduates' families and friends.
After the presentation of the graduation certificates the Director Programs Bruce Filcock announced the NMIT Outstanding Student of the Year Awards. These awards were presented to students showed a capacity for leadership and demonstrated outstanding levels of skill within their fields of study.
The Outstanding Student of the Year in the Apprenticeship Category was awarded to Shareena Sloane from the Certificate III in General Construction (Painting).
The Outstanding Student of the Year in the Koorie Category was awarded to Noretta Knight from the Certificate III in Multimedia.
The Outstanding Student of the Year for the Faculty of Hospitality, Tourism and Personal Services was awarded to Nicholas Steward from the Diploma of Remedial Massage.
The Outstanding Student of the Year for the Faculty of Further Education was awarded to Belinda Smith Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing.
The Outstanding Student of the Year for the Faculty of Engineering was awarded to Matthew Randall from the Advanced Diploma of Electrical Power Systems.
The Outstanding Student of the Year for the Faculty of Earth Sciences was awarded to Yen Ong from the Certificate IV in Applied Design (Landscape).
The Outstanding Student of the Year for the Faculty of Business was awarded to Tara Shannon from the Advanced Diploma of Business (Accounting).
The Outstanding Student of the Year for the Faculty of Building and Construction was awarded to Adriana Stankovic from the Diploma of Arts (Interior Decoration and Design)
The Outstanding Student of the Year for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences was presented to Indiana Avent from the Advanced Diploma of Music Performance (Jazz and Contemporary)
The 2008 Outstanding Student of the Year was selected from one of the nine, and was awarded to Tara Shannon from the Faculty of Business. Tara has demonstrated exceptional capabilities in student life and demonstrated leadership skills that have made them an asset to the NMIT community.
The NMIT Outstanding Student of the Year Awards were sponsored by The Scanlon Foundation. The Foundation donated $10,000, $1,000 for each of the ten awards.
