Melbourne Polytechnic Trades College courses are known for their high quality training, industry experienced teachers, flexible delivery and ability to connect students to the building and construction industry. We have state of the art facilities at both our Heidelberg and Epping Campuses.

At Melbourne Polytechnic, we offer a range of trades within the building and construction industry:

Courses range from pre-apprenticeships, apprenticeships and non-apprenticeships with pathways to further study. We can also enrol you in individual units to enhance your skills in the workplace, upgrading your knowledge within the building and construction industry.

Melbourne Polytechnic delivers high quality tuition to for you to pursue a career in the construction and design industry with a sustainable overview.

You will have the opportunity to work on industry recognised projects with highly experienced teachers, receive a flexible delivery approach and have the opportunity to connect directly to the building and construction industry.

The degree courses offered at Melbourne Polytechnic through Sustainable Design and Construction are:

  • Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Civil)
  • Associate Degree of Engineering Technology (Civil)

Melbourne Polytechnic's Sustainable Design and Construction department has the advantage of drawing on experience and knowledge from the Building and Construction faculty. Melbourne Polytechnic has a long-standing relationship with industry and its associations and has an exceptional reputation as a leader in building and construction training.

Students who have successfully completed the first two years of the Bachelor degree may choose to exit with the Associate Degree of Engineering Technology (Civil) qualification.

Certificate II in Building and Construction (Bricklaying)

Certificate II in Building and Construction (Carpentry) - Pre-Apprenticeship
The Certificate II in Building and Construction - Carpentry (22216VIC) is offered as an individual qualification and also as an opportunity for a dual qualification with the Certificate II in Joinery, Shopfitting and Stairbuilding – Pre-apprenticeship (22145VIC). Build a future in carpentry, joinery, stairbuilding and shopfitting to become the apprentice every site manager wants to employ on a diverse range of building projects.

Certificate II in Building and Construction (Painting and Decorating)
Climb the ladder to a colourful career. Work with your hands and use your flair for creating interesting surfaces with our Certificate II in Building and Construction (Painting and Decorating). Learn skills you can use across the building and construction industry, as well as specific skills in painting and decorating.

Short Courses
Scaffolding Licence - Basic Level
Melbourne Polytechnic's Scaffolding Licence - Basic Level short course provides participants with the required skills to erect, alter and dismantle all types of modular scaffolding systems to provide work platforms for construction purposes, including edge protection, access ways and falsework. On successful completion, participants can apply to WorkSafe for a Basic Scaffolding Licence.

Plan Reading
Melbourne Polytechnic's short course on Plan Reading offers participants the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required to read and interpret construction plans.

Gas Refresher Course
The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) – Plumbing requires all plumbers and gasfitters to undergo a skill assessment in gas fitting. Fortunately, Melbourne Polytechnic has designed this perfect Gas Refresher short course to cover off the basic skills a plumber and gasfitter needs.

Plumbing Practice
Melbourne Polytechnic's Plumbing Practice short course is a tutorial to assist participants in preparing for the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) - Plumbing Registration Exam. Participants will improve their hand skills to exam standard, and revise and become familiar with the registration exam processes.

Converting A Type Gas Appliances
Melbourne Polytechnic's short course in Converting A Type Gas Appliances, provides knowledge for plumbers wanting to convert ‘A’ type appliances from one gas type to another using the correct components and installation procedures for these appliances.

Estimating Costing and Contracting for the Building Industry

Basic Carpentry

The Melbourne Polytechnic Elevated Work Platforms program enables participants to develop basic knowledge, understanding and use of an elevated work platform (EWP) and the role of the EWP within the building construction industry.

Introduction to Waterproofing

Basic Wallpapering for Master Painters Association
