The Foundation Studies department covers a wide range of English language courses, including English as an Additional Language (EAL), Adult Migrant and English Program (AMEP), Adult Literacy and Basic Education (ALBE) and the Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) program.

A foundation for your future

Our Foundation Studies department will provide you with an individually-tailored program to work towards employment or further study.

Melbourne Polytechnic is an approved SEE provider. All Foundation Studies courses are Austudy/Abstudy and Centrelink/Department of Human Services approved for job seekers. You can start courses at any time and there are flexible entry and exit points.

The Foundation Studies department is located in Melbourne’s Northern suburbs and taught at our Preston, Epping and Collingwood campuses.

Certificate I in EAL (Access) - Foundation Studies - SEE - VTG
Our Certificate I in English as an Additional Language (EAL) teaches basic English language skills to adults from non-English speaking backgrounds. It focuses on language speaking, reading, writing, listening skills, numeracy and learning.

Certificate I in Spoken and Written English - Foundation Studies Department - AMEP - SEE - VTG
Melbourne Polytechnic's Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) Certificate I in Spoken and Written English is designed for newly-arrived migrants and refugees to develop basic English reading and writing skills to prepare for life in Australia. The course provides you with an understanding of Australian culture, teaches valuable skills for employment, and is customised to meet your individual learning needs.

Certificate I in Spoken and Written English - YAMEC (Young Adult Migrant Education Courses)
Are you new to Australia and from a non-English speaking background? If you’re aged 15 to 26, and have had disrupted, incomplete or no prior education, then Melbourne Polytechnic’s Certificate I in Spoken and Written English, Young Adult Migrant Education Courses (YAMEC) is the learning program for you

Certificate II in EAL (Access) - Foundation Studies Department - SEE - VTG
Melbourne Polytechnic's Certificate II in English as an Additional Language (EAL) (Access) is designed to teach pre-intermediate English language skills to adults from non-English speaking backgrounds.

Certificate II in EAL (Employment) - English for Hospitality - SEE - VTG
If you would like a career in hospitality, concentrating on the area of cookery, then Melbourne Polytechnic's Certificate II in English as an Additional Language (EAL) (Employment) can provide you with the skills you need. The English language course incorporates seven hours per week of practical kitchen work, plus three hours per week of hospitality theory. Employment opportunities are excellent, and may lead to work in hotels or restaurants.

VCAL Carpentry - Foundation
Our Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Carpentry Course is a dual qualification providing a Certificate II in Building and Construction (Carpentry) and a VCAL Certificate at Foundation level.

Melbourne Polytechnic’s Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Carpentry course is a dual qualification giving you a Certificate II in Building and Construction (Carpentry) and a VCAL Certificate at Intermediate level.
