Horticulture

Grow a sustainable career

Melbourne Polytechnic's hot-house of horticulture courses teach you the essential skills for working in the world of plants.

Horticulture plays an increasingly vital role in conserving our environment and developing sustainable solutions for land management, landscaping, garden design, and resource and water scarcity. You’ll develop specialist knowledge and skills in areas such as garden design and landscaping, revegetation, tree health assessment and management, retail nursery management, irrigation, soils and plant nutrition, turf management, plant identification, plant propagation and health.

Melbourne Polytechnic’s extensive Horticulture facilities include specialist propagation facilities, a state-of-the-art greenhouse, a plant tissue culture laboratory, a soils laboratory, extensive gardens for practical work and a fully operational commercial plant nursery and cafe. You’ll get hands-on experience on campus and off, thanks to Melbourne Polytechnic’s long association with the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show. Our students have a history of winning major competitions for garden design, achievable gardens and floristry.

Graduates from Melbourne Polytechnic’s Horticulture courses might find work in horticultural consultancy, garden and landscape design, arboricultural consultancy, irrigation specialisation, maintenance gardening, sports turf farming, and maintenance or floristry.
