The Diploma of Tertiary Studies lets you jump right into higher education.

The one-year program provides the necessary strong grounding in academic and foundational learning required in bachelor degree-level studies, including:

  • quantitative reasoning
  • critical thinking

Small, supported classes mean that you get to know your lecturer and classmates in an encouraging learning environment while receiving ongoing feedback on written and oral academic tasks. Lecturers are able to spend time with you one-to-one and focus on your learning needs.

You will have the opportunity to take up to three electives from some of Melbourne Polytechnic’s specialist degrees including Education, Agriculture and Technology, Creative Arts, and Business.

Successful completion of this course will give you credit into our own Bachelor of Education (Early Years) and also our degrees, in Business and Agriculture and Technology. The Diploma of Tertiary Studies also provides you with credits for the Bachelor of Arts at La Trobe University and Deakin University.

Once you have looked through the units of study and electives listed below, it is worth noting that you also have the opportunity to take three electives from other Melbourne Polytechnic higher education degrees. Ask us for further information.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You can seek RPL where your work or qualifications of an advanced and related nature have been undertaken. Academic Credit is granted on a case-by-case basis, according to our Academic Credit policy and associated procedures. Applications for Academic Credit will be assessed by relevant Melbourne Polytechnic academics and where appropriate, industry experts.

  • completion of Year 12 VCE or Senior VCAL

  • apply through VTAC or to Melbourne Polytechnic


mature age applicants:
  • applicants 21 years of age and over will be required to demonstrate their ability and capacity for higher education studies and participate in an interview and literacy assessment
  • previous study and work history will be taken into consideration

Pathways to further study

Melbourne Polytechnic provides seamless pathways towards higher qualifications. Successful completion of the Diploma of Tertiary Studies will give you up to 3 subjects credit into our HEFEEDEY Education degree - Bachelor of Education (Early Years). You may also be able to pathway into other Melbourne Polytechnic Higher Education degrees. In addition you'll be eligible for a full semester's credit towards the Bachelor of Arts at La Trobe University and Deakin University (currently under review).

Career Pathways

Develop a broad range of general professional and academic transferable skills. Electives permit focused study and the chance to gain academic credit and experience studying at degree level in a range of different disciplines. These combine to offer pathways into Bachelor degrees at Melbourne Polytechnic or other higher education institutions and universities.

Units Of Study

Credit points are a basic measure of student workload. All subjects are given a credit point value. Most subjects at Melbourne Polytechnic are 12 credit points. A normal full-time annual workload is 96 credit points. The academic year is divided into two main semesters; full-time students usually enrol in 48 credit points each semester, part time students usually enrol in 24 credit points each semester or less.
