We offer you teachers who are industry professionals, and top equipment and facilities. In fact, Melbourne Polytechnic is a three-time award winner of the Institute of the Year Award (AIPP Australian Professional Photography Awards).

The Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging qualification applies across a range of industries. This broadens your future opportunities – so you can work in a variety of photographic/photo imaging fields.

A sound technical and theoretical knowledge is integrated with creative image making capabilities. You can become an independent photographic practitioner, or work in a related field such as advertising, fashion editorial or the press.

Develop industry skills and knowledge

The Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging further refines your skills in the photographic disciplines. This includes specialist image capture, advanced studio and location lighting, refined digital image enhancement, web design and advanced level printing.

Our teachers are all industry professionals, there to guide and support throughout your study. Staff also provide opportunities for you to become involved with the photographic industry and collaborate with other students within the Melbourne Polytechnic creative arts network.

Course outcomes

You will be qualified to work in a variety of photo imaging and photographic areas, including:

You will be assessed through your course work and folio presentation.

Recognition of Prior Learning

You can seek RPL where your work or qualifications of an advanced and related nature have been undertaken. Academic Credit is granted on a case-by-case basis, according to our Academic Credit policy and associated procedures. Applications for Academic Credit will be assessed by relevant Melbourne Polytechnic academics and where appropriate, industry experts.

Required materials, books and timetables will be provided at course induction or class enrolment by the teaching department.
You will need your own Digital SLR Camera and lens and Portable Hard Drive (1TB) and will be required to purchase specialist equipment/materials and printing paper as needed throughout the duration of the course

Entrance Requirements


Academic: Australian Year 12 equivalency
English: Academic IELTS 5.5 with no individual band below 5.0, Pearson PTE Academic 42 overall with no individual communicative skill below 36, or recognised equivalency
Other: Applicants are required to have a demonstrated interest in photography.*
*Applicants seeking entry into the Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging are required to present a folio, which should demonstrate the use of a range of materials and techniques.
