Melbourne Polytechnic’s Diploma of Auslan PSP51018 is an advanced language course, combining all of the skills you’ve learned throughout our unique Auslan pathway. As you advance your skills, you’ll develop further skills and understanding of social and educational conditions for the Australian Deaf community. Melbourne Polytechnic has a long history within the disability sector, and as Victoria’s sole provider of this accredited pathway to learning Auslan, you will have opportunities to participate in Deaf community-based activities and events with our industry partners. This will include an Immersion Program with Expression Australia which will give your real-world experience that will increase your employability before you even graduate.

Melbourne Polytechnic’s Diploma of Auslan PSP51018 is accredited to enable you to work in educational institutions, government, performing arts and a wide range of other situations involving the Deaf community. You could also move into further study and enter specialised sectors, including aged care, early intervention, DeafBlind support, employment consultancy or counselling.
Diploma of Auslan PSP51018 Free TAFE
Enrolment in the Diploma of Auslan PSP51018 may be covered by free TAFE, a Victorian government initiative that covers tuition for eligible students. Enrolling in the Diploma of Auslan PSP51018 is recommended If your intention is to gain qualification up to Diploma level. If your intention is not to complete up to the Diploma level, then consider enrolling in a certificate. To check your eligibility, please see Free TAFE Eligibility.
Exciting new development in 2024
We are excited to let you know that 2024 will see the establishment of the Deaf Centre of Excellence at the Melbourne Polytechnic Collingwood Campus. We are expecting the completion of the Centre in early 2024. By Semester 2 2024, all classes are expected be located at our purpose-built space. We look forward to meeting you there in July!

Study Pathways
Successful completion of the Diploma of Auslan PSP51018 allows you to take your studies of Auslan further in interpreting, or learning international sign languages. Many students upon completion of the Diploma of Auslan PSP51018 transition to the Diploma of Interpreting (LOTE - English) PSP50916.

Pathway Program for students who have completed Certificate IV in Auslan PSP40818.
Prahran Campus
- Full time: Four days a week for 18 weeks. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Part time day: Two days a week for 36 weeks. Thursday and Friday. 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Classes will run at the Prahran campus during the first 18 weeks and at the Collingwood campus for the last 18 weeks of the course.
Direct Entry Program
Prahran Campus
- 2-Year Full time: Four days a week for 18 weeks. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. 9:30 am to 3:30 pm
- 4-Year Part time day: Two days a week for 36 weeks. Monday and Thursday. 9:30 am to 3:30 pm
- 4-Year Part time evening: Two nights a week for 42 weeks. Either Monday and Wednesday night or Tuesday and Thursday night. 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm plus six full-day face-to-face on-campus Saturday workshops
- Classes will run depending on enrolment numbers
- All classes will move to the Collingwood campus in Semester 2 2024
Preston Campus
- 2-Year Full time: Four days a week for 18 weeks. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. 9:30 am to 3:30 pm
- 4-Year Part time evening: Four days a week for 18 weeks. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. 9:30 am to 3:30 pm
- Classes will run depending on enrolment numbers
- All classes will move to Collingwood campus in Semester 2 2024
E-Campus (Online)
- Part time evening only: Two nights a week for 42 weeks. Either Monday and Wednesday night or Tuesday and Thursday night. 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. plus six full-day face-to-face on-campus Saturday workshops
- Full time classes not available for online delivery
- Classes will run depending on enrolment numbers
- No new part-time classes starting in July

Fees displayed are effective for new applications received on or after 1st of November. Tuition fees do not include textbooks, course materials or overseas student health insurance and visa fees.
After initial deposit, international students are able to pay tuition fees in installments, four times per year.

The State Government’s Free TAFE for Priority Courses initiative covers the cost of tuition (excluding Amenities Fees and Materials Fees) for students who are eligible for government subsidised training and enrol into one of the Priority listed course.
Free TAFE is available to eligible students for one course enrolment in a lifetime.
Free TAFE places are limited. Please call 1300 635 276 and we can advise you whether Free TAFE places are still available.
Free TAFE for Priority Courses initiative covers the cost of tuition fees for students who are eligible. Materials and amenities may still apply.
The Free TAFE for Priority Courses initiative will pay your tuition fees for only one course. Once you have commenced in a tuition-free priority course, you are not eligible for further tuition-free places again, even if you do not finish your first tuition-free priority course.

Additional expenses
The Student Services and Amenities Fee is charged at forty cents (40 cents) per student contact hour and is capped over a twelve (12) month period, effective from the enrolment date, to:
- $250 for full fee-paying students; and
- $175 for concession-paying students studying Certificate I, II, III, or IV.
Amenities fees are used to improve non-academic services including libraries, counselling services, student support, and recreational activities.
Auslan courses at Melbourne Polytechnic
Requirements
Pathway program: Successful completion of Certificate IV in Auslan PSP40818 or equivalent.
Two-year full-time program or Four-year part-time program: There are no formal requirements but attendance at an Information Session is highly recommended. A mandatory interview will be scheduled as a part of the application process. You will be offered a place after a successful interview outcome.
ACSF Woking Level 4 for Reading and ACSF Woking Level 3 for Numeracy.
Academic IELTS 5.5 in writing and reading (exemption from overall, listening and speaking)Other: Applicants are required to be at least 18 years old
