Sharpen your focus

The Certificate IV in Photography and Photo Imaging is Melbourne Polytechnic’s entry level photography course. We give you training and experience in a wide range of photographic disciplines. This includes image capture, studio and location lighting, DSLR video, darkroom (Fairfield campus only), digital image enhancement and printing. Our photo imaging facilities provide you with excellent resources to build a comprehensive folio.

We were the three-time winner of the Institute of the Year Award (AIPP – Australian Professional Photography Awards).

Develop industry skills and knowledge

The Certificate IV in Photography and Photo Imaging will develop your technical skills in a creative environment. You will prepare for the professional photographic industry through excursions, visiting speakers, industry relevant projects and course exhibitions.

Course outcomes

Successful completion of this Certificate IV will provide you with the opportunity to progress to the Diploma of Photo Imaging, as well as giving you the skills needed to work as a studio assistant or assistant photographer. Potential employment opportunities include working in a wedding/portrait studio, digital retouching agency, print laboratory or photographic sale point.

Assessment

You will be assessed through a combination of work-based projects and course-based assignments.

Recognition of Prior Learning

You can seek RPL where your work or qualifications of an advanced and related nature have been undertaken. Academic Credit is granted on a case-by-case basis, according to our Academic Credit policy and associated procedures. Applications for Academic Credit will be assessed by relevant Melbourne Polytechnic academics and where appropriate, industry experts.

You will need your own Digital SLR Camera and lens and Portable Hard Drive (1TB) and will also be required to purchase specialist equipment/materials and printing paper as needed throughout the duration of the course

Academic: Successful completion of Australian Year 12 equivalent, a literacy and numeracy test required, folio and folio presentation.
English: Academic IELTS 5.5 with no individual band below 5.0, Pearson PTE Academic 42 overall with no individual communicative skill below 36, or recognised equivalency
Other: Applicants are required to have a demonstrated interest in the photography field.
