Develop your passion as a creative jewellery maker
The Certificate III in Jewellery Manufacture is offered as an apprenticeship and non-apprenticeship course and conducted using competency-based training and curriculum.
Skills and study areas
You’ll learn skills in ring manufacture, casting applications, design (including CAD), rubbed settings, stone setting, gemmology and repairs. We take you through our introduction to jewellery making and cover a range of techniques such as surface embellishment techniques, coronet and claw settings and ring remodelling. We also ensure you are educated on advanced techniques and the latest workplace health and safety (WHS).

Study in our professional Jewellery Centre with skilled teachers. Our studios offer the latest in equipment and has an excellent reputation within the industry.
The college is affiliated with the Gold and Silversmiths Guild of Australia and the Jewellers Association of Australia (JAA). The JAA has information on its website explaining the process of how to get an apprenticeship.
Platinum, gold and silver are important industries throughout Australia. Skilled workers in small businesses and larger enterprises perform jewellery production, and a number of apprentices are employed each year.
You will be assessed on your drawing exercises, report/projects, production of samples, satisfactory finishing of hand skills projects, and formal tests as required. This includes the completion of the competencies set by Melbourne Polytechnic and reflected in your training plan.
Recognition of Prior Learning
You can seek RPL where your work or qualifications of an advanced and related nature have been undertaken. Academic Credit is granted on a case-by-case basis, according to our Academic Credit policy and associated procedures. Applications for Academic Credit will be assessed by relevant Melbourne Polytechnic academics and where appropriate, industry experts.

The student tuition fees as published are correct at time of publication and subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment. All enrolments excluding RPL/RCC and Higher Education incur an annual Amenities fee with a maximum cap of $250
Assessment MethodsSatisfactory completion of the competencies reflected in your training plan. Assessment methods include drawing exercises, report/projects, production of samples, satisfactory finishing of hand skills projects, and formal tests as required. To qualify for assessment, you must ensure all course fees and levies are paid in full
MaterialsWe will supply class notes and non-precious materials for general work.
You are required to have and maintain your own basic hand tools and bring them to practical classes and are encouraged to work in silver for some of the test articles.
If you choose to work in precious metals you need to provide these yourself
- basic reading, writing, mathematics
- some ability in manipulating small-scale tools an advantage
- apprentice program - you must be apprenticed in the trade of jewellery making
Pathways to further studyYou may extend your qualifications by undertaking further study in the areas of gemmology, diamond technology and jewellery valuation. The course offers a pathway into our Diploma and/or Advanced Diploma of Jewellery and Object Design
Career PathwaysYou will be qualified to work in the manufacture of jewellery in platinum, gold and silver - important industries in Australia. You may go on to work in a range of jewellery related professions including jewellery manufacture, 3D designing/printing, diamond and gemstone setting, watchmaking, gemmology, polishing and plating, valuing et al*. *Note: some of these professions will require further study
