If you are not quite ready for work but interested in learning skills valued by employers in the workplace such as independence, team work, communication, recreation and social skills and you are a person with an intellectual disability, autism or cognitive impairment, Melbourne Polytechnic’s Certificate I in Transition Education 22567VIC is for you. You will explore and participate in work and community activities. The skills you’ll learn will depend on your goals and abilities and include using public transport, using technology safely, social skills, reading and writing, budgeting, basic cooking, recreation and health, creative media, dance and movement and exploring future options. Your self-esteem and confidence will grow as your interpersonal skills improve, and you’ll find independence and active participation in the community much easier.

In 2018, we won ‘Inclusive Training Provider‘ in the Department of Education’s Victorian Training Awards (VTA). We are very experienced at teaching students with a disability so you can be confident that you will have the support you need. We’ll work with you, your family and advocate or carer to create an individual learning plan based on your needs and goals so you can learn at your own pace. Your class will have a maximum of ten students to ensure you have you have an individualised program in a caring and supportive environment. You’ll benefit from real-life interactions with Darebin City Council, Consumer Affairs Victoria, Metro Trains Community Education Unit, Ambulance, Police and Fire Services and the TREV Sports Tournament. The course also includes three workshops for Parents as Career Partners.

Concession fees are charged at 20 per cent of the standard fees for enrolments in Certificate I to IV courses. To be eligible students must meet Skills First eligibility criteria and present a valid:

  • Commonwealth Health Care card, or
  • Pensioner Concession card, or
  • Any dependent spouse or dependent child of one of the above cardholders, or
  • Veterans Gold card.

The following groups are eligible for concession fees from Certificate I to Advanced Diploma level:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
  • Asylum Seekers and victims of human trafficking

Additional expenses

The Student Services and Amenities Fee is charged at forty cents (40 cents) per student contact hour and is capped over a twelve (12) month period, effective from the enrolment date, to:

  • $250 for full fee-paying students; and
  • $175 for concession-paying students studying Certificate I, II, III, or IV.

Amenities fees are used to improve non-academic services including libraries, counselling services, student support, and recreational activities.

Next Steps

Work Education students are required to complete and return an application form and attend an informal interview to find the best suited class and discuss any additional requirements that may be needed to support studies. All future students who have submitted an application will be contacted via email to schedule the interview between August and December.

Students will need to also organise a Unique Student Identifier (USI) if they don't have one. This can be done online. Please bring this along to the interview session with any other documents and identification required which will be outlined to you in the email.
