Learn independent life and social skills
If you are not quite ready for work but interested in learning skills valued by employers in the workplace such as independence, team work, communication, recreation and social skills and you are a person with an intellectual disability, autism or cognitive impairment, Melbourne Polytechnic’s Certificate I in Transition Education 22567VIC is for you. You will explore and participate in work and community activities. The skills you’ll learn will depend on your goals and abilities and include using public transport, using technology safely, social skills, reading and writing, budgeting, basic cooking, recreation and health, creative media, dance and movement and exploring future options. Your self-esteem and confidence will grow as your interpersonal skills improve, and you’ll find independence and active participation in the community much easier.

Melbourne Polytechnic leads the education sector in experience and innovation for transition and work education. In 2018, we won ‘Inclusive Training Provider‘ in the Department of Education’s Victorian Training Awards (VTA). We are very experienced at teaching students with a disability so you can be confident that you will have the support you need. We’ll work with you, your family and advocate or carer to create an individual learning plan based on your needs and goals so you can learn at your own pace. Your class will have a maximum of ten students to ensure you have you have an individualised program in a caring and supportive environment. You’ll benefit from real-life interactions with Darebin City Council, Consumer Affairs Victoria, Metro Trains Community Education Unit, Ambulance, Police and Fire Services and the TREV Sports Tournament. The course also includes three workshops for Parents as Career Partners.

You may be assessed using an integrated approach. Learning outcomes may be grouped together and assessment of the module may be achieved through an activity that takes into account all learning outcomes. Assessment methods will respect your learning style and may include discussion, demonstration, oral questioning, short answer, practical exercise, role play, recorded report and observation. Fees displayed are effective for new applications received on or after 1st of November. Tuition fees do not include textbooks, course materials or overseas student health insurance and visa fees.
After initial deposit, international students are able to pay tuition fees in installments, four times per year.

Concession fees are charged at 20 per cent of the standard fees for enrolments in Certificate I to IV courses. To be eligible students must meet Skills First eligibility criteria and present a valid:
- Commonwealth Health Care card, or
- Pensioner Concession card, or
- Any dependent spouse or dependent child of one of the above cardholders, or
- Veterans Gold card.
The following groups are eligible for concession fees from Certificate I to Advanced Diploma level:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
- Asylum Seekers and victims of human trafficking
Additional expenses
The Student Services and Amenities Fee is charged at forty cents (40 cents) per student contact hour and is capped over a twelve (12) month period, effective from the enrolment date, to:
- $250 for full fee-paying students; and
- $175 for concession-paying students studying Certificate I, II, III, or IV.
Amenities fees are used to improve non-academic services including libraries, counselling services, student support, and recreational activities.

Next Steps
Work Education students are required to complete and return an application form and attend an informal interview to find the best suited class and discuss any additional requirements that may be needed to support studies. All future students who have submitted an application will be contacted via email to schedule the interview between August and December.
Students will need to also organise a Unique Student Identifier (USI) if they don't have one. This can be done online. Please bring this along to the interview session with any other documents and identification required which will be outlined to you in the email.
