Grand, fast-paced and very rewarding. These are the words our Real Estate teacher, Joseph Detering uses to describe the industry that he’s passionate about.
One of the best ways to ensure you’re industry-ready is to learn from a professional who is deeply embedded in their chosen field. Joseph has been in the real estate industry for over 10 years and continues to work in a Melbourne agency. “My mission is to prepare students for the real world,” Joseph says. “That's what vocational training is all about and I do my best to make sure that the tools are in place for students to hit the ground running with their qualification.”
Using his unique insights of the industry, and years of practical experience, it was a natural progression for Joseph to start teaching. “I became a teacher because I enjoy imparting knowledge,” he says. “There's a continual learning atmosphere in the classroom and that never stops being fun. The education journey that each student goes through is immensely rewarding.”
Business to Classroom Perspective
As an example of the insights students may benefit from, Joseph believes in a ‘business to classroom’ perspective. “I think the biggest change in property is to know the intricacies of the market; not just the legislation. To understand where the property market's moving so that you can educate the people involved in buying and selling, or leasing and renting, and so forth. That is probably the biggest challenge, understanding these factors and building on your instinct.”
Keeping across the dynamics of a classroom full of students is no mean feat. We asked Joseph about his favourite moments as a teacher. “It’s the light that turns on in people when they understand the course content and discussions. They’re learning right before your eyes. Knowledge can really change people's lives. The greatest lesson a teacher can give a student is to not just impart knowledge but teach students how to find the knowledge”.
