Sterling success at the recent WorldSkills Australia National Competition

Congratulations to Amy Kennedy, a Certificate III in Jewellery Manufacture student who won a silver medal in Jewellery in the recent WorldSkills Australia National Competition.

NMIT locksmiths open doors around the world

International NMIT locksmiths are finding the key to success lies with a local employer, Wynns Locksmiths of Preston. From a total staff of 16, Wynns has eight current or former NMIT international students working from countries as diverse as Japan, Malaysia, England, Israel, Romania, Colombia and India.

Locksmithing Teachers Win at Gold Panning Championships

Locksmithing teachers Max Cherry and Paul VandeWetering, along with Max's brother Tom, have won the teams’ event at the 2012 Australian National Gold Panning Championships. Fourteen teams raced against the clock to pan the buckets for gold flakes. Max and Paul's team found all their gold – 24 flakes in each bucket.

Renewable Energy Study Grant Recipients Return from Tour of China

Luke Smith and Elin Bernehjalt, students from the Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology – Renewable Energy received Study Tour Awards as part of the 2011 NMIT Study Grants Program for their academic excellence. They’ve recently returned from their Renewable Energy Study Tour of China sponsored by the Clean Energy Council. Their trip included visits to leading renewable energy developers and manufacturers, meeting influential decision makers and networking with Chinese renewable energy graduates. Stay tuned to hear more about their tour in the next issue.

Annie Broadway – Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology – Jewellery

Graduate Annie Broadway has won an award at the Buda Contemporary Australian Silver and Metalwork Exhibition held on 15-16 June (this is one of the most prestigious shows in the field in Australia). The work showcased by Annie was created during her time at NMIT and was a part of her collection that was exhibited at the Northcote Town Hall show in 2010. Annie was also recognized by the Jewellery department as their outstanding Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology – Jewellery student for 2010. See Annie’s website to see her work.

Success Story – Sarah Heyward

When Melbourne artist, Sarah Heyward, enrolled in a short course in jewellery making at NMIT, she enjoyed it so much she applied for the Advanced Diploma. Since her graduate show, for which she won an award, the former community worker has exhibited her contemporary jewellery collections in galleries around Australia.
