NMIT viticulture graduate follows his nose overseas

A love of wine has taken NMIT graduate Sam Cook halfway around the world. After completing his Bachelor of Viticulture and Winemaking degree at NMIT in 2010, Sam has now found success working for a boutique wine merchant in London and is looking forward to the opportunities that London will bring.

Blooming success at the recent WorldSkills Australia National Competition

Congratulations to Horticulture (Landscape) students, Alden Meale who won gold and Ryan Dahlblom who won silver in the recent WorldSkills Australia National Competition. The pair will form the Landscape Construction Team that will represent Australia in the WorldSkills International Competition.

NMIT Animal Studies and Veterinary Nursing set to grow in 2013

NMIT's Animal Studies and Veterinary Nursing programs will expand in 2013! Following a decision by Victoria University to discontinue its programs in these areas, NMIT has begun preliminary discussions regarding the transition of Victoria University students to NMIT.

NMIT signs equine memorandum in Malaysia

NMIT has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with one of Malaysia's leading universities, the University of Technology Malaysia (UTM), to develop joint initiatives in equine studies

Recirculating aquaculture systems workshops

In April NMIT hosted a two day workshop on aquaculture recirculation technology which drew participants from as far away as Malaysia. The workshop was held in association with Australasian Aquaculture 2012 conference.

Horticulture students win at Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show

Horticulture students have once again enjoyed great success at the recent Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show. Tamara Koelmeyer was the joint winner of the Lysaght Landscape of the Year Award and Cara Hinsley won second place in the Achievable Gardens Competition.

Floristry Students Major Win Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show 2012

Three NMIT Certificate III in Floristry students made a clean sweep of the MIFGS Student Floral Design Competition. Taking out the trifecta with Naomi Paterson, taking first place followed by Celestine James (2nd) and Jennifer Mentiplay (3rd).

NMIT Horticulture Graduates Win Scholarships to Jerusalem

Diploma of Ornamental Horticulture graduates, Trevor Seppings and Natalie Simmons are the first Australians to be awarded scholarships to work at Israel's Jerusalem Botanic Gardens (JBG) for a six month placement. The 30 acre gardens, in the heart of Jerusalem, house 10,000 plant species, including 200 Australian plants, making it the largest of its kind in Israel.

NMIT Steers toward Success at the Melbourne Show

At this year’s Royal Melbourne Show, Diploma of Agriculture students received numerous awards in the carcass judging and cattle handling competitions. Highlights included Kirsten Stead being awarded third place in the Angus Steer export weight class (546 – 728kg) and NMIT being awarded first place as the highest placed school or institute in a led class.
The cattle handling competition saw first place go to Peter Bekiaris, second to Madeline Logan and third to Stephen Sierakowski. Read more in the NMIT news article.

Partnership between City Of Whittlesea, Citywide and NMIT Blooms

NMIT students with intellectual and learning disabilities are involved in an initiative with Citywide, City of Whittlesea’s parks and gardens maintenance provider. The students will help Citywide staff plant 18,000 new trees, plants and shrubs throughout the Whittlesea municipality over the next few months.

Heather Newhnham – Bachelor of Equine Studies

Heather Newnham Bachelor of Equine Studies recently received some good news and bad news.  She recently beat fierce competition to win a 12 month Equine Breeding Farm Internship at Colorado State University only to find out that she could not secure a visa to get to the States.

Heather heard about the internship while on a study trip to the United States in 2010 funded by a $12,000 award from NMIT's Study Grants Program (sponsored by Iskander Racing and Breeding).  As part of the study tour, she attended the Kentucky World Equestrian Games and completed a short course in Advanced Equine Reproduction at Colorado State University. 

Centre of Excellence Northern lodge continues to improve its bloodlines and quality of its bloodstock.

Northern Lodge is one of the finest thoroughbred training properties in Australia and runs a commercial thoroughbred breeding program with its own broodmares and stallions. NMIT staff recently attended the nation’s leading broodmare sales and purchased six quality broodmares. These mares, along with the current breeding stock, will further enhance the pedigree diversity and depth of the broodmare band which will also result in some high quality foals. 

Career Change pays off from Chef, Baker, Owner to Angus Producer

Peter Billings took a big step when he decided to change from working as a chef and baker in charge of a Brumbies Bakery in Melbourne, to managing his father-in-law’s farm at the foot of the Otways just south of Winchelsea growing Angus beef. He made the move after an intense year of study in Agriculture at NMIT’s 200 hectare Yan Yean training property. Learn more about Peter’s story in – A ‘farm-change’ pays off in Stock and Land.

Wins for NMIT at 2011 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show

NMIT Horticulture students proved to be a big success in this year’s Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, including Marjorie Cornelius (Certificate III in Floristry) who won a Gold Medal for her creation in the Advanced Student Floral Design Competition, Corey Blake (Certificate IV in Applied Design (Landscape)) in taking out the coveted Don Fleming Award in the Student Landscape Design competition and Leanne Burns (Certificate IV in Horticulture) who won the Lysaght Blue Steel award for her entry in the Avenue of Achievable Gardens competition.

2011 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show

NMIT Horticulture students featured prominently in some of the most prestigious awards presented at the 2011 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (MIFGS) in April.

Equine graduates get jobs

NMIT Equine Stud Management graduates are building an impressive industry reputation, with three former students receiving job offers at one of Australia's most established stud farms. Congratulations to Shannon Jelic and Chloe Jones for making a great first impression with industry. 

Australian Pruning Competition

NMIT's Earth Sciences Faculty are hosting this year's Australian Pruning Competition at NMIT's Northern Lodge vineyard at Eden Park.

When? Friday 29 July, at 10am.

Registrations for competitors close July 22. 

Singapore Training Academy for Racing (STAR)

In recognition of the changing face of the farrier profession, the Singapore Turf Club has initiated the STAR Program with NMIT to oversee farrier training modules that ensure the maintenance of industry standards.
