About the IELTS Test

The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) assesses the language ability of people who need to study or work where English is the language of communication. It tests speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

More than 2.2 million IELTS tests were taken in the past 12 months, and IELTS Results are accepted by more than 9000 organisations in more than 135 countries, as well as more than 3000 in the US.

There are more than 900 IELTS test locations in more than 130 countries, with IELTS being available up to four times a month, or up to 48 times a year.

IELTS results are available after 13 calendar days. It is not possible to gain a pass or fail result from an IELTS test. The IELTS score you need is determined by the requirements of your visa or the university, college, employer or immigration authority to which you are applying. We suggest you check the minimum score you need with the organisation you are applying to.

The same listening and speaking tests are taken by all candidates.

Candidates must choose to do either:

  • The IELTS Academic version (typically for entry into tertiary studies or for professional registration)
  • The IELTS General Training version (typically for entry into secondary schools, colleges, workplaces and for immigration purposes)

To find out more about the two versions of IELTS, as well as the format, content and duration of the test, please see the IELTS Information for Candidates brochure.
