During this Decade – 1940s


Second World War – Australia joins Britain in the fight against Nazi Germany and 27000 Australians lose their lives including teachers from Collingwood and Preston Technical schools.

1945: Howard Florey was named joint winner of the Nobel Prize for his work on the development of penicillin

1949: post-war migration from Europe takes Australia’s population to around 8 million.

1949: Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric scheme begun (completed in 1972)
