Melbourne Polytechnic’s Primary Industries department develops industry focused training that integrates the latest research knowledge, practical skills and commerce so our graduates meet the contemporary challenges facing primary industries in Australia.

In all areas of Primary Industries, Melbourne Polytechnic works with industry specialists to explore the latest in:

  • Animal studies including veterinary nursing

Our primary industry students are qualified to take diverse and emerging career paths in areas including soil science, sustainability, thoroughbred training, land management and rural business, as well as traditional cattle and sheep farming. Students studying in the areas of Conservation and Animal Sciences can be confident that the skills and knowledge attained from their training will ensure industry respect and career success.

Agriculture

Melbourne Polytechnic has commercial standard properties at Eden Park and Yan Yean with facilities including a fully functional 600-ha mixed farming operation.

The Primary Industries department also has:

  • award-winning viticulture and winemaking facilities using fourteen grape varieties grown at Northern Lodge vineyards in the Plenty Valley and Ararat

Melbourne Polytechnic’s Forklift Licence short course covers the theory and practical operation of forklift trucks and provides the key information on forklift operating safety and regulations. Upon successful completion, you will be issued with a Licence to Perform High Risk Work card issued by WorkSafe Victoria (LF - Class) and a completed unit of competency TLILIC2001A Licence to operate a forklift truck.

Short Courses
Whole Farm Planning Course
Melbourne Polytechnic offers this full and vibrant short course as a series of weekend workshops at our farm in Yan Yean. Completion of the unit of competency AHCAGB505A Develop a whole farm plan, will earn you credit towards attaining a nationally recognised qualification in Agriculture (Certificate I-IV and Diploma).

Basic Home Butchery
Basic Home Butchery covers the skills of knife sharpening and the processes involved in breaking down a sheep carcase. At the end of the course, participants will be able to break a mutton carcase into primal cuts and sharpen and maintain knives.

Wine Appreciation
Melbourne Polytechnic's deliciously fragrant short course in Wine Appreciation, will guide you through the process of evaluating wine. The course starts with an introduction to the basic tastes and students will have an opportunity to understand their own tasting strengths in relation to these basic tastes.

Basic Livestock Essentials
Melbourne Polytechnic provides a fabulous opportunity to undertake a short course in animal management. The course is offered as a series of weekend workshops at Melbourne Polytechnic's farm in Yan Yean, along with some theory sessions at the Epping Campus. Completion of the nationally recognised units of competency will earn you credit towards attaining the Certificate III in Agriculture.

Grazing Management (PROGRAZE) Course
Melbourne Polytechnic's short course in Grazing Management (PROGRAZE) is designed for individuals who want to better manage their pastures and optimise livestock production. It provides practical skills and background knowledge about how pastures and livestock interact.

Introduction to Beef and Sheep Breeding
Melbourne Polytechnic's state-of-the-art farm in Yan Yean offers this fabulous short course - Introduction to Beef and Sheep Breeding, as a series of weekend workshops. Completion of the nationally recognised units of competency will earn you credit towards attaining the Certificate III in Agriculture.

Introduction to Winemaking
Melbourne Polytechnic's mouthwatering short course, Introduction to Winemaking, guides students through the basics of the winemaking process. Each student will make a small batch of wine during the course and learn how to manage a fermentation, rack and fine a finished wine.

Farm Chemical Users Course
Melbourne Polytechnic's Farm Chemical Users short course is run over two sessions and is an essential requirement to gain an Agricultural Chemical User's Permit (ACUP) in the primary industries.

Introduction to Tractors Course
This course is offered as a series of weekend workshops at Melbourne Polytechnic's farm at Yan Yean as well as a theory session at the Epping campus. Completion of the unit of competency AHCMOM202A Operate Tractors will earn you credit towards attaining a nationally recognised qualification in Agriculture (Certificate I-IV and Diploma).

Wine Appreciation (Advanced)
Melbourne Polytechnic's tantalisingly fragrant short course in Wine Appreciation (Advanced) begins by introducing you to techniques for evaluating wines and identifying the major wine faults. The course then commences a whirl-wind tour of the wine world, stopping at all major regions and varietals. You'll become the Jules Verne of the wine world.

Chainsaw Operation and Safety
Melbourne Polytechnic's short course in Chainsaw Operation and Safety is designed for people working in the basic operation of chainsaws. This one-day course is designed to provide skills in the operation of chainsaws and the promotion of safe working practices.

Farm Fencing Course
Farm Fencing is a short course offered as a series of weekend workshops at Melbourne Polytechnic's farm in Yan Yean, as well as a theory sessions at the Epping Campus.
